The City: Jimmy Breslin's Words
December 5, 2004 To the Editor: How can one celebrate Jimmy Breslin (Nov. 14) without mentioning his fearless attacks on injustice? Jimmy surely depicted the characters of our great city, but he did not hesitate to expose and speak in the people's voice against the institutions that try to crush the little guy. His columns about the killing of Eleanor Bumpurs and Amadou Diallo, his revelation of the cheapness (to some!) of the lives of Mexican day workers, his challenge to the Catholic Church and, most recently, his columns about the heart-rending deaths of young people in Iraq who never understood the deal they had made with this devil of a government. Viva Jimmy Breslin! The city is a poorer place without his words.
